Lowbrow Truth Serum
No way of thinking or doing, however ancient, can be trusted without proof. What every body echoes or in silence passes by as true to-day may turn out to be falsehood to-morrow, mere smoke of opinion, which some had trusted for a cloud that would sprinkle fertilizing rain on their field. -- Henry David Thoreau, tax dodger.

That's odd. You post a picture of a cow and I write a poem about one. What are the odds is what I ask. What are the goddamn odds?
"In the off-season, the Falcons added a college-style option, which was unleashed on Tampa Bay and its aggressive defensive ends in Week 2. The Falcons ran for a franchise-record 306 yards in a 14-3 victory."
OK, so you want to use The Atlanta victory against the Bucs as an example in your quest to prove college football teams are better than NFL teams?
Yeah, the "college-style option" sure helped Atlanta beat hell out of a miserable Tampa Bay team. Sadly, when facing a respectable team like the Giants, the college bullshit moves didn't work. I love Vick running the option. Here's why: In Sunday's game Vick threw an interception, lost a fumble and was sacked seven times. Over his career, he averages a fumble and an interception a game -- terrible, especially considering how few TDs he throws. Vick's 14 for 27 passing against the Giants is fantastic for him and the 154 yards passing is damn good -- for him -- but the problem is, posting those kind of stats puts you well under most starting QBs in the NFL. He's over-hyped and over-payed. But because he's a fan favorite the team has to stick with him and that's why the desperate dirty birds have to use a scheme, the option, that doesn't work in the NFL. How many other teams use the QB option? I don't know for sure, but for sure, but I bet the answer would rhyme with fun. And other teams don't use it because they're not forced to start a quarterback who can't throw from the pocket or throw at all. The QB option does not work because NFL linebackers, defensive linemen and D-backs are smarter, faster and bigger than their college counter parts. I would give Vick this kind of game every week if I was an opposing defense...154 yards passing, are you kidding me? That shit flys with college teams that have fewer and less complicated plays to use against defenses that consist mainly of guys that will never play a down in the NFL, but not in the big leagues boy.
I look forward to your retort.
The option is garbage. Dunn, what has Atlanta done since, you know, playing against good teams? Nothing.
That team's defense is nasty, but the offense is stagnant because of Vick. He offers no consistency in the passing game, only big play capability. The book is out and containing Vick is possible: focus the d-line on the running game and use a defensive back/fast linebacker spy. Any team with these tools, i.e. any good team, will beat Vick. What Vick does offer is the ability to beat teams his team should beat, which is to his credit.
Vince Young will be better, because Young is more like Randall, who could pass. This kid has already shown he sees the field and wants to pass. His accuracy is better and he already seems more relaxed in the pocket. Vick bounces around too much.
Vick is the only QB fast enough to even consider running an option frequently, but he isn't able to pull it off. The option can be categorized as one thing in the NFL: a trick play. Good call Pell.
Go Lions!
Jesus you guys are obsessed with football. I like sports and all, but I don't understand the intensity of some (most) people's affinity for the stuff.
I just posted that because Pell's staple argument that college football is less competitive, or less interesting, or on a lower level, however you want to cash any of these concepts out, is that you just can't run the option in the NFL. The defense is too quick, athletic etc. etc. When I read this the other day I thought, ha, that's funny, I'll post it on Mike's blog.
I didn't think posting this quote would "prove college teams are better than NFL teams". That is a complete mischaracterization of my position and clearly prima facie implausible.
And Drew, thanks for your "Around the Horn" style moderation. Maybe you should write for ESPN the magazine.
Go Lions.
Dunn, I'm writing for Docsports.com. The NBA is my specialty but I'm also doing some NFL and college football.
PETA claims it takes four of these lovely cows to make one basketball. Does it take more cows to make an NFL football or a NCAA football? BTW, did you here that KU football was thinking about putting in artificial turf?
none, it's pigskin
